1. any one of a small group of trees related to the witch hazel, especially the sweet gum tree of North America, that in warm regions exudes a gum used in the preparation of chewing gum and in medicine, and a species of Asia Minor that yields the balsam known as liquid storax.
2. Also, liquid amber. the resinous gum that exudes from the bark of the sweet gum.
